DNS, or Domain Names Services, is a protocol allowing to associate a character(human readable) name with a given IP address and/or arbitrary text data.

DNS requests are made to either obtain a service (host) address (or text content in case of TXT records) from its host name, or get its host name from IP address (the reverse DNS request). Both can be used to monitor the consistency of DNS zones as well as to make sure the host name resolves to valid address.
